NEAR GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- On Tuesday crews will begin the last major project to remove the 88-year-old Savage Rapids Dam from the Rogue River.
The $40-million removal project began after state and federal officials promised to fund most of the cost.
The dam began delivering water to Josephine County farms in the spring of 1922. It withstood major floods in 1927, 1955, and 1964, but underwent major overhauls in the late 1940's and early 50's when fish ladders were added to the south side.
