MEDFORD, Ore. - To beat the heat, many people will be hitting Oregon's waterways this holiday weekend, and water safety is key.
Here are some water safety tips:
-Wear a life-vest. Life jackets not only keep you afloat, but also help keep your body warm while in water. If you plan on spending the holiday weekend on a boat. It is required you have enough life jackets on board for every person. Kids 12 and younger must wear theirs at all times. Also have a throw cushion, a noise producing device, and a fire extinguisher.
-If someone is stuck in the water, reach with a paddle, stick, throw bag or rope. Swimming after them should be the last option. If you find yourself overboard in rapids, remain calm. Experts say the water will eventually kick you back up. Also keep your feet forward.
Even though we are seeing hot temperatures, that doesn't mean the water is warm. Experts say an extended amount of time in the cold water could lead to hypothermia.
