YREKA, Calif. -- A wildfire driven by 20 mph winds has burned more than 5 square miles of the Klamath National Forest near the Oregon border.
The Tennant Fire broke out Sunday afternoon and has burned more than 3,120 acres, and is expected to grow. No buildings have been threatened. The fire is burning along a 40 mile stretch on both sides of Highway 97. The stretch of land is about 25 miles northeast of Weed.
U.S. Forest Service spokesman Duane Lyon says Highway 97 closed for about 30 miles between Weed and Klamath Falls Sunday night and Monday morning. It has since reopened.
At last report the fire is 10 percent contained. Lyon said Monday that the cause is still being investigated.
Over 300 firefighters are battling the fire. Crews are using three helicopters, 11 engines, and 15 bulldozers.
"A wind driven fire is extremely dangerous, so they're gonna have to be extra cautious in posting lookouts and being aware of the fire situation at all times," Lyon said.
A command post has been set up at the Macdoel Elementary School. Officials say they are hoping to have the fire fully contained by Saturday, July 25th.
