NEAR KERBY, Ore. - An old landfill near Kerby is costing Josephine County tens of thousands of dollars a year.

Since the landfill closed in the early 1990s, it has transformed into a grass field, but state and federal regulation require the county to monitor and report what's going on underneath the dirt. They have to see if pollutants are making their way into the soil and water off site.

However, watching the site will cost the county $138,000 over the next two years.
