UCC's Southern Oregon Wine Institute has its First Harvest

By Lindsey Doi

CHATEAU NONCHALANT, Ore. -- Students at Umpqua Community College's Southern Oregon Wine Institute planted its first grape vines five months ago, and are taking part in their first harvest thanks to the help of several Umpqua Valley wineries.

Local wineries say they all share a vested interest in making sure the SOWI suceeds, both for the local economy and even their own businesses. Institute directors say without the help and donations from other wineries, the wine institute would likely have to wait three years before harvesting any of their own grapes.

This weekend, UCC students will pick even more donated grapes at the Freed Estate Vineyards in Winston. Program directors say they expect to bottle their first wine within the next six months.
