MEDFORD, Ore. - A black bear removed from Lone Pine Elementary School in Medford earlier this month was killed last weekend after returning to the city.
After trapping and tranquilizing the bear on the school's playground October 14th, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife biologists released him in the Hyatt Lake area near Klamath Falls.
The bear made a 78 mile return trip in 10 days. ODFW reports he was killed last weekend on a ridge above Medford, within two miles of the city limits.
Biologists say they had hoped the bear was young enough to have accidentally wondered into town, but when he returned, they felt they had no choice.
