Medford Airport undergoes fog seeding

MEDFORD, Ore. - Driving in the Rogue Valley Monday morning was exceptionally slippery around the Rogue Valley International Medford Airport, and many may have noticed what they thought was snow.

However, the precipitation was actually the result of fog seeding.

Monday morning was the first time the airport has fog seeded this year. When the fog is exceptionally thick and the temperature is below freezing, the airport contracts with Medford Air to seed the air.

They apply the cloud seedent, which is like dry ice crystals. It pulls the moisture out of the air and makes it fall to the ground.

Fog seeding does come at a price. But it is less than the cost of canceling a flight.

The fog layer is expected during the morning hours throughout the week.
