SALEM, Ore. -- About one-third of the teachers at the Hillcrest and MacLaren youth correctional facilities are expected to be laid off.
The Statesman Journal newspaper reports the Willamette Education Service District will formally approve the layoffs at its board meeting Tuesday night.
The state pays to educate youths in the facilities who are younger than 21 and have not finished high school.
The Department of Education says student enrollment has been less than anticipated. Enrollment counts from February showed 40 fewer students than budgeted for.
Union consultant Paul Kyllo told the newspaper at least 10 of the 33 teacher are expected to lose their jobs effective May 1.
