MEDFORD, Ore. -- More high schoolers are graduating in all of Oregon, and at the same time, fewer kids are dropping out; the rate is down to an all time low in Oregon.
The drop out rate for the last school year is 3.3%, down just slightly from the previous year. Only two Jackson County school districts have higher than average drop out rates. The Medford school district has a rate of 4.78% and Phoenix/Talent has a county high number of 4.81%.
Schools say, however, you need to look at the numbers closely. For example, North and South Medford High School both are below the state average- but the drop out rate at central is 21.49%.
At Phoenix, their high school has 1.59%, but their charter school brings their average up; Armadillo Technical Institute has a 34.62% drop out rate.
"It's hard for us to be lumped in that way because really if you separate it as I said those two schools we'd be right up near the top," says Teresa Sayre, the Director of Instructional Services at the Phoenix/Talent School District.
The state also increased the four-year graduation rate from 66% up to 67% this last school year. If you want to see the break down of numbers by school district, click here.
