GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- A Veterans Affairs Outreach Clinic opened Wednesday in Grants Pass.

It will serve veterans living in rural and remote areas of Josephine County who previously had two options to receive health care though the VA: Drive to the Roseburg VA Medical Center, or the VA SORCC in White City.

Only veterans currently living in Cave Junction, Kirby, Selma and Williams can use the facility, which amounts to approximately 350 veterans. For the timebeing, Grants Pass residents still have to travel to the other VA facilities.

The VA plans to expand the clinic to provide services to all of Josephine County within the next two years. Of the 10,000 veterans in the county, about 4,100 are enrolled to receive medical care through the VA.

The new facility is open three days a week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

I have a couple of concerns

I have a couple of concerns about the new clinic: 1) vets cannot use the clinic if they live in the town of Grants Pass 2) only 40% of vets in Josephine County are ellgible to use the clinic 3) Cat 8, making too much money. The story I like to tell is, two brothers enlist in the service. Both serve their duty and get honorable dischages. The one brother get a job and works long enough to get a good retirement. The second brother just works and get social security. They both get sick at the same time. Brother 1 is not ellgible for help from the VA because he makes too much on his retirement but Brother 2 is ellgible because he gets only social security. Until the VA changes Cat 8 will Vets get the help they need.
