Board looks at closing schools in Klamath Co.

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -- The Klamath County School District is considering closing two rural schools to cut costs.
 
Superintendent Greg Thede is recommending the school board merge two pairs of rural elementary schools.
 
He says his proposal would combine Malin with Merrill Elementary School and Gearhart with Bonanza Elementary School to save $400,000 the first year of consolidation and $500,000 each year after that.
 
The Herald and News of Klamath Falls reports the district would operate four fewer elementary schools next fall if the Malin and Gearhart schools close.
 
The district has already decided to close Fairhaven and Altamont elementary schools at the end of the school year.
 
The school board hears Thede's proposal Thursday.
