Final Farewell

By Kelly Burke

September 25, 2009

Three and a half years. Such a short amount of time in this journey that is life, but for me it quickly came to mean so much more. In early January 2006, I loaded up my car and went from Arizona girl to Oregonian in the blink of an eye…didn’t know a soul and definitely didn’t know what to expect.

I’ve always believed that everything happens for a reason, and so I took a leap of faith, ready to make good on the same chance KDRV took on me. Forget a love-hate relationship…this marriage was all love. I can honestly say I have loved every second of the last three and a half years at the station, and most days hardly felt like I was working a real job. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to kick off my career in such a wonderful place.

From the great people of Southern Oregon to the majestic beauty of the Rogue Valley to the amazing sports stories I was able to tell and athletes I was able to meet, I have plenty of moments that remind me of why I got in this business and that will propel me forward as I take the next step.

I have never been good at goodbyes, and leaving Newswatch 12, my friends and co-workers, the kids and coaches I cover, and everything I’ve grown so familiar with and love is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. I think I cried more times Monday (my last day) than I have in my entire life, but I guess it just goes to show how much Oregon has meant to me.

As I sit in my Southern Illinois hotel room writing this, I am excited for what is next. I have taken a sports job at WSIL-TV in Carterville, IL (home of So. Illinois University and the Saluki’s) and will start next Monday trying to win over the people of the Midwest. Most of all, though, I have a smile on my face knowing that I am so lucky to have shared an unforgettable run with all of you.

I invite you to keep in touch with me as I continue to work my way up the ranks of this crazy business to ESPN, which has been my lifelong dream. Thank you for your support, trust, and friendship and for inviting me into your homes every weekend. A special thanks to the KDRV team whom I will cherish and miss, especially Will Southwood, my amazing partner in Southern Oregon sports. Take care Southern Oregon and keep in touch!
