Medford street vendors want detachable canopies

MEDFORD, Ore. - Some street vendors in Medford are asking the city council to reevaluate the city code concerning canopies.

Currently the city code allows a canopy only if it hangs less than two feet on either side and it attaches to the stand. However, the vendors want to have a detachable canopy to allow them to stay open on wet days.

Due to the city code, Chiloso's Burritos and Troy's Top Dogs have been forced to close their stands when it rains.

City councilors say there are safety concerns with a detachable canopy because the wind could blow it over and hit a pedestrian or a vehicle.

The council hopes to have a decision made by the next council meeting on November 5th.
