The Columbia River Gorge: Frozen in Time

MULTNOMAH FALLS, Ore. - The Columbia River Gorge appears frozen in time.

Normally, raging waterfalls look like paintings and ponds are frozen. Days of arctic air created a living postcard.

At Multnomah Falls, dozens of photographers huddled over their cameras to capture the rare image.

Throughout the gorge, sun and a clear blue sky lit up the frozen landscape. At Rooster Rock, a thick layer of ice stretched for nearly 100 yards into the Columbia River.

The ice and cold isn't affecting river traffic. However, earlier this week high winds and heavy waves sank two boats near the John Day Dam. No one was hurt. For the most part, the cold snap isn't creating any real problems in the gorge, just memories.
