Boy Scouts to celebrate centennial

MEDFORD, Ore. - 2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts.
 
In the seven Southern Oregon and Northern California counties in the Crater Lake Council of Boy Scouts, there are about 5,000 boys. Local leaders say the program is showing slow but steady growth in recent years.
 
"It's a leadership based program. It teaches kids how to become leaders. It's achievement-based. They get to earn awards, each week, each month, each year. And it progresses throughout their lifetime," Council Executive Director Rick Burr said.
 
The council has several activities planned in celebration. A gathering is planned for the weekend of May 22nd at Stewart State Park, at Lost Creek Lake.
