YREKA, Calif. - 22,000 California teachers received layoff notices this week amid the state's budget crisis, including 40 in Siskiyou County.
The Siskiyou County Office of Education says that makes up about 11-percent of all teachers within the 25-district county.
The pinks slips do not mean all the teachers will get laid off. Of the 26,000 teachers who received pink slips this time last year, 60 percent ended up losing their jobs.
"Some of those teachers will come back if there are retirements that weren't taken into account, or if more funding should become available," said Kermith Waltes with the Siskiyou County Office of Education.
Districts say more funding could come if the county sees an increase in enrollment.
However, in some Siskiyou County districts declining enrollment is contributing to the budget issues. The Yreka Union District is down about 50 students compared to this time last year.
