Home for the Holidays

Part of working in the news business is understanding that it is always on. There are no evenings, weekends or holidays off, there is always someone, somewhere working. I've been trying to get my mother to understand this for ohhh the past six months, basically since I've started at Newswatch 12.

I worked over the Thanksgiving holiday and I really enjoyed it (mostly in part to the delicious meal I had with other family-less friends and co-workers)! Now it would have been nice eating dinner with the family but it got me thinking, the news is not the only industry working on the holidays. Think about it, everything you do on those days, get gas, buy food, see a movie, watch sports...all those little activities take people and workers to make happen. Football is a staple during Thanksgiving and Christmas, you've got camera operators, announcers, trainers, stadium workers, concession stands...so many necessities that make your holiday experience seem normal has thousands of people working over the holidays.

I'll be back at it this Christmas, along with our producers, directors, editors, weathermen and production assistants. I think it will be harder to work Christmas than it was for Thanksgiving but four days later I will be on a plane home to see my family...a much awaited and anticipated holiday homecoming!
